"Arrival"
Part 2 - by Bandbabe

Summary: This is what Max should have done in "Departure".
Author's Note: This story is very long. It's very different from any other fan fic I have ever wrote. First, I wrote this on Notepad (the same program I use to write HTML for my various web sites) instead of Microsoft Word. I guess that deserves a mention because it gave the story a raw feel. Second, I totally did this story on a whim. I had the scenario in my head for weeks but I had trouble putting it on paper (so to speak). So I started writing it off the top of my head, never expecting to post it because I totally made it up as I went along. I hope it doesn't contradict itself or become repetitive too much. Third, when I see a really bad finale I feel compelled to rewrite it for peace of mind. Anyway, I know it author's note is way too long. On with the story.
Disclaimer: I own nothing except the plot.

Part 2

"Tess," he said breaking the thick silence. "I love you and I know that you love me. I don't understand what happened back there. Can you tell me everything?"

Tears welled up in her eyes. "I didn't kill Alex," she admitted. "Kavar did."

Max quietly digested the information.

"The day before his death was announced Alex came to my house--only it wasn't Alex. Kavar had control over him. I saw it in eyes. His eyes were so cold." She shuddered at the thought. "He wanted me to hand over you, Michael, Isabel, and the granolith. When I said I wouldn't he told me Alex will die and the others would think I did it. He said Alex's mind was very weak and he would die whenever he decided to leave his body. Then Kyle walked in. It was like he was zombie. Kavar had gotten to him. Before he left Alex's body he told me a chain is only as strong as its weakest link."

"So what Kyle said.." Max trailed off.

"Kyle was programmed," she told him.

"Max, what I said back there.. I was tired of defending myself. You seemed so ready to believe what the others said. I just let you keep on believing what you thought. I figured Kavar won. And that maybe it was better if I left. I wanted you to hate me so you could just go on with you life."

"But why? I haven't treated you as well as I should have," he admitted. "I've said and done some terrible things. Why did you try to save me?"

"Well, it wouldn't be the first time. Five years after we came out of our pods, I found out you guys were living in Roswell. I didn't want you guys to grow up with Nasedo so I didn't tell him. Instead of searching southwest New Mexico like we were supposed to, I changed it to southern New Hampshire."

Max was surprised. She had sacrificed so much for him. He felt stupid for ever doubting her.

"Tess.. about what I said.. I was so angry and hurt and confused. I just wanted you to hurt like I was hurting. I'm sorry."
