Boy Friend

Author's Note: This is the second short story I wrote for this series.
Disclaimer: This is pure fiction. It's written in 1st person.

I was fierce. I was strong. Today was the day I was gonna tell James I loved him. Well, just ask him to the movies on Saturday. I had to admit, I was so scared. I wasn't sure if he liked me back. I was 13 years old then. My name is Katie. Kay for short. I'm five feet tall and have gray eyes and dark auburn hair. My crush at that time was James, but you already know that. James was 14. He was a few inches taller than me and had dark, almost black hair with the deepest blue eyes you've ever seen! He was on our Junior High's basketball team, the Blue Hawks. James and his last girlfriend Jen broke up two weeks earlier so he was free to pursue.

Now back to my "fierce" attitude. I spotted James in the hall next to his friend, Gavin's locker. I stood across the hall a few lockers down for a moment. I had to muster up the courage. After months of swooning over him I was finally going to take action. I got my chance when Gavin left. James was still there eating a bag of Doritos. I closed my eyes for a few seconds and started over there. I got this strange fainting feeling from the pit of my stomach. My heart was racing. I swallowed hard and stopped right next to him.

"Hey James," I said nervously. He looked up.

"Oh, hi Kay." He responded with a smiled. Yes! He knew my nickname. He had the sexiest smile. Then he got back eating to his chips.

"Great game last week," I complimented. Uh no! 'Great game'? What was I doing?

"Thanks." He said. One word answers? I was choking. I had to think fast.

"Sleepy Hollow looks like a great movie," I blurted out.

"Yeah," he answered. Time to cut to the chase.

"Do you wanna to see it on Saturday... Together?" I winced in pain immediately after I said it. This was the moment of truth.

He suddenly looked up.

"What?" he asked shocked.

"Like a date, maybe, or something..," I trailed off.

"Look, Kay, you're a terrific girl. Your pretty and smart but... can't we stay friends?" I think he said. I wasn't really listening. I felt horrible. Like my heart burst and shattered into a thousand tiny pieces. I had to get out of there. I didn't want him to see me cry.

"Look, James, I'm just gonna go," I said. I pretty much ran down the hall. I didn't wait for response.

"Kay, wait!" He yelled after me. And that was that.

After two weeks of avoiding him I finally decided to break the ice. The place, a crowded lunchroom. He and his friends always sat at the back left of the cafeteria. I just got my lunch tray and decided to stop by his table on the way back to mine.

"Hi James," I said with uncertainty. He was with his friends Gavin, Trevor, and Tyrell. They were also on the basketball team.

"Hey Kay," he said back. He got up and pulled me over to the side. "Look Kay, I didn't mean to hurt you-"

"Don't worry about it. I'm cool," I interrupted.

"So, did you see Sleepy Hollow yet?" he asked.

"No," I answered.

"Me and a group of friends are going to see it this weekend. Do you want to come along?" he asked with warm smile.

"Sure. Well I better go before my food gets too cold," I said. We both laughed as I walked away. It's funny. Before we just talked in Global class and exchange an occasional 'hello' in the busy hallways. Now I have a boy friend.
